Howto install and use VMware Data Recovery 1.1

I published few months ago some explanations on how to install the new vSphere utility Data Recovery. Data Recovery is a very usefull tool that permit you to save easily all VMs on a dedicated disk, Lun or a Windows CIFS share. Many people asked me questions about that. So this is an update and a step by step howto with the new version : Data Recovery 1.1.

To use Data Recovery, you need the Advanced, Entreprise or Entreprise Plus edition of vSphere, a vCenter, an AD and a correctly working DNS. Refer to your VMware representative for more information about licensing and price.

You may download it here. It may be useful to download Daemon Lite utility too. this tool allow you to mount an .ISO file as windows drive like D:.After mounting your fresh VMware Data Recovery ISO on your vCenter, you may run the plugin installer program.

vCenter will deploy the OVF into your vSphere farm. According your target disk speed, you may take a cup of tea.

At this point, we may imagine your Appliance was deployed without any problem. You are ready to start it.

If needed, add a Lun/vmdk or a RDM in your Datarecovery Appliance’s description to store your backup datas. Refer your VMware and your storage manuals to know how to configuring it.

Note you can’t access a console on this VM, just start it.

Come back home page of your vCenter and start VMware data Recovery

Enter your infrastructure credentials

Click on create a backup job

Select all the VMs you want to backup

If you mapped a vmdk or a RDM, you need to format and mount it.

Unfortunatly OK …

After formatting the new data volume it needs to be mount.
Choose your backup windows

Check your needs

Click on Finish the backup will start asap ….

And now, the great question : how to restore ?

Select the virtual Machine you need to recover
Select what you want to restore

Click on restore

… and the job starts. It’s very easy. I hope this post was useful, enjoy !
