Société d’Exploitation du Tramway et du réseau de bus de l’Agglomération d’Orléans (SETAO), was recognized for integrating the Pillar Axiom storage system into its existing VMware environment, successfully improving Oracle database performance by 10 times and reducing its energy consumption by 80%.

Each year, the InfoWorld 100 Award recognizes the 100 most innovative uses of IT initiatives to further business goals. The selection is based on the excellence and quality of the work environment. “This year’s recipients of InfoWorld’s highest honor are shining examples of IT projects undertaken by tech leaders committed to pushing their organizations forward,” said Jason Snyder, Features Editor, InfoWorld.

SETAO manages data from trams and buses, vehicle radios, billing systems, electrical systems, traffic lights and video feeds from surveillance cameras throughout Orléans. In addition to gathering and maintaining this information, the company makes real-time traffic information available via mobile devices and makes surveillance data available for law enforcement. To manage this massive amount of data, the company maintains 15 Oracle databases and other applications on 70 virtual machines.

“SETAO is a great example of taking a potential problem and using technology in such a way that reaps massive benefits for the thousands of people it serves,” said Mike Workman, Chairman and CEO, Pillar Data Systems. “It’s no surprise that since SETAO has deployed the Axiom, it has also capitalized on Pillar’s SSD product, using it to inject more power into its traffic simulation application. In the hands of SETAO, Pillar’s SSD solution provides electric lighting in a world where candles were the only option. Congratulations to Olivier Parcollet and his team. We are proud to be your storage partner.”

Pillar Data Systems is the first vendor in the storage industry to provide an Application-Aware storage system where performance is dynamically adjusted for those applications which require it, and storage utilization is greatly increased due to the ability to more reliably predict performance. With Pillar’s Application-Aware capability built on its patented QoS technology, SETAO was able to classify applications from the highest importance to the lowest, allocating appropriate resources for maximum storage utilization. Pillar Data Systems’ Application-Aware storage system helped SETAO improve database performance, decrease energy costs, simplify scalability and reap better storage efficiency – perfect for SETAO’s always-on system. Additionally, SETAO’s traffic simulation tools now work in an hour, instead of a day, having huge impact on the efficacy of simulation tools to help route traffic around a broken water pipe or similar event.
