Dear VMware Customer,

On October 5, 2009, VMware® announced the general availability of VMware vCenter™ Site Recovery Manager 4.0 ("Site Recovery Manager"). Site Recovery Manager 4.0 delivers new features such as support for NFS-based storage replication solutions, simplified many-to-one failover using "shared recovery sites", compatibility with VMware vSphere, as well as additional product improvements.

It's important to note that the underlying licensing functionality for Site Recovery Manager has changed. Site Recovery Manager 1.0 used "FlexLM" licensing. Site Recovery Manager 4.0 uses the same type of serial number license keys as vSphere 4 and other vCenter products. In order to upgrade your existing Site Recovery Manager 1.0 deployment to version 4.0, you will need to assign your new license keys after upgrading. Please note that you have been automatically given new license keys which replace your existing Site Recovery Manager 1.0 FlexLM license key files; you can find these keys by logging into the Licensing Portal.

You are receiving this email because our records indicate that you are a license administrator for one or more VMware Support & Subscription (SnS) contracts, which include licenses for Site Recovery Manager. Please read the following information carefully, as it affects your license entitlement.

According to the terms and conditions set forth by VMware Support, customers who have maintained active SnS contracts on their licenses will automatically receive licenses for Site Recovery Manager 4.0 once the general availability of the software is announced.

Please consider the following important points for your license upgrade entitlement:

• Site Recovery Manager 4.0 is a free upgrade for existing Site Recovery Manager customers with active SnS contracts. Your new Site Recovery Manager 4.0 licenses are available for download from your account page on the VMware license portal.
  
• The specific quantity of Site Recovery Manager 4.0 license keys you will receive depends on the number of Site Recovery Manager licenses you currently have under maintenance.
  
• Your new Site Recovery Manager 4.0 licenses are only for upgrade or replacement of existing Site Recovery Manager licenses, NOT for additional deployment.
  
• Please note that when applying Site Recovery Manager licenses, only ESX hosts that are running virtual machines protected by Site Recovery Manager need to have Site Recovery Manager licenses applied. You only need to deploy Site Recovery Manager licenses at the protected site. The only case when you need to deploy Site Recovery Manager licenses at both the protected and recovery site is when you've set up Site Recovery Manager for bi-directional protection (i.e. Site B protects Site A, while at the same time, Site A protects Site B). In this situation, each site is a recovery site for the other.

To ensure problem-free transition to Site Recovery Manager 4.0 licensing, please verify your account information and download the new product license keys in preparation for the software upgrade.

Please perform the following tasks at your earliest convenience:

• Log into your VMware account portal and verify that your purchased license quantities are correct.
  
• Verify that your VMware SnS contracts are not expired or about to expire and cover the purchased license quantities.
  
• Obtain your Site Recovery Manager 4.0 license keys from the VMware vSphere/vCenter license portal.
  
• Download the Site Recovery Manager 4.0 software .
