In the next in our series of mini-interviews with Nexus 1000V customer, we have thoughts from Olivier Parcollet, IT Architect at SETAO. Those of you who went to VMworld Europe might have seen Olivier join Ed Bugnion during his keynote. Thank you, again, Olivier for your time.
O.S. : What was your overall impression of the Cisco Nexus 1000V distributed virtual switch?O.P. : Cisco Nexus 1000V fills the gaps that existed in virtual infrastructures and allows full control of both the physical and the virtual aspects of machines. The Cisco Nexus 1000V allows greater granularity of virtual machines on the network, an overall view of administration of the network, and allows network administrators to take control of the virtual machines. Finally, even though it is still in a beta version, I was impressed by the flawless operation of the Cisco Nexus 1000V.
O.S. : Will the ability to apply network and security policy to specific VMs/applications increase the number and types of applications you move to a VM environment? Why or why not? What other impacts do you see on your server virtualization plans?
O.P. : Using Cisco Nexus 1000V to raise virtual machines to the same functional level as physical machines will clearly allow us to increase the number of applications that we will be able to virtualize and still provide a very high level of security.
O.S. : How easy or difficult was it for your network and server/virtualization admin to implement and access the features of the Cisco Nexus 1000V? Was their any significant training or change in operational procedures required? What do you see as the impact on day-to-day operations when you deploy this in your production environment?
O.P. : For people who already know Cisco, the Cisco Nexus 1000V is very easy and intuitive to start using. The major impact of this tool is that network teams now can take control of the entire network and thus are able to administer virtual machines. The immediate consequence is that this prevents a large number of conflicts between the network teams and virtualization teams and better defines their respective roles.
O.S. :Based on the functionality delivered by the vSphere + N1KV, will you accelerate your data center virtualization plans—do you see a higher percentage of your x86 workloads being virtualized? Why?
O.P. : Everything is already virtualized at Setao! In fact, the combination vSphere + N1KV will strengthen this initiative because we are now going to be able to have everything we work on in the physical world in the virtual world, such as the centralized control panel, for example.
